OFFLINE MODE
------------

Last Updated: 20-April-2000

Offline mode is a little tricky to setup and this documentation is not very
good, but hopefully both will improve with time.

The file scripts/make-cd is a script useful for making the offline snapshot.
Start by creating an empty directory to contain the snapshot and copy the
make-cd script to that directory.

make-cd takes the following parameters:

	index - index.html album/index_*.html
	navbar - album/navbar.html
	help - album/help_*.html
	survey - album/survey.html
	toc - album/toc_*.html
	thumbnails	- album/pictures/*/thumbnails_*.html
	images - album/images/*
	pictures	- album/pictures/*/*_*.html
	movies - album/pictures/*/*.html

If you specify no parameters to make-cd, all will be assumed. "thumbnails" must
follow "toc", and "pictures/movies" must follow "thumbnails".

The only task the script does not perform is to populate album/pictures/* with
the actual .jpg photos. You can either copy the image files directly from your
existing album installation, or create new (higher quality) images specifically
for the offline version.

Before using make-cd, you will need to change some of the variable settings at
the top of the file.

The purpose of the script is to produce a file and directory layout as follows:

/index.html - where the user starts

  /album/help_about.html	-
  /album/help_biglittle.html	|
  /album/help_captions.html	| various
  /album/help_cookies.html	| help
  /album/help_copyright.html	| files
  /album/help_privacy.html	|
  /album/help_terrible.html	-
/album/index_big.html - index to show big photo toc
/album/index_little.html	- index to show little photo toc
/album/index_movie.html	- index to show movie toc
  /album/navbar.html - navbar
/album/survey.html - user survey (required internet to submit)
/album/toc_big.html - toc for big photos
/album/toc_little.html	- toc for little photos
  /album/toc_movie.html - toc for movies

  /album/images/*.png - little arrow icons

  /album/pictures/*/thumbnails_*.html	- thumbnail pages
  /album/pictures/*/*.html - image pages
  /album/pictures/*/*.jpg - photos

To enable the generation of an offline snapshot, make sure the $offline
variable in constants.php3 is not set. It should appear commented out as so:

  //$offline=false;

You can uncomment it when you're done creating the snapshot if you like.

For obvious reasons, users of the offline snapshot cannot set preferences,
add/update/delete captions, or create custom photos. All of the captions
currently in the album at the time the snapshot is created will appear in the
snapshot. The user survey can be included, but the user will need an internet
connection to submit a completed survey. Also, you will need to ensure that
your survey submit URL (http://something/album/survey-submit.php3) remains
fixed over time.

After you have created the snapshot using make-cd, test it and make any changes
you want to achieve the desired look. Then burn it to a cd or post it to a
web site that you can't run the album on because of lack of scripting.
